Resisting 2

(cont'd from yesterday's post)

This woman "and the opposition movement she has created are the only things standing between the people and Nicolás Maduro and his thugs." 

She's not the kind of leader you'd expect to win the hearts of Venezuelans because "she's too white and too rich." But she stands for principles the people love, like personal dignity, the freedom to start a business, reuniting families torn up by migration. "Grandparents die alone because their children decided to walk thousands of miles and cross jungles to reach societies where they can thrive."

Electricity may be turned off by the government when she plans a rally, so the people "turn on the flashlights on their cell phones and silence themselves to listen." If they block the roads, fishermen bring her by boat. If they block tv and radio, social media carries her message.

When her candidacy was barred, she asked the people to vote for her stand-in. With record numbers voting, polls indicated a landslide for her representative. But Maduro claimed the victory.

Resisting

Inflation climbed 9,000% from 2012 to 2022, and that is just the tip of the misery iceberg in Venezuela where socialist dictators Chavez and Maduro have held control since 1998. Chavez changed the constitution to take the country by revolution when his term as president was to end in 2003.

A third of the country's citizens (eight million) have left it, and the people are desperate. Take a look at the "man-made hell" they've been dealing with here.

Opposing the government of Maduro (successor to Chavez) is dangerous. This author was convicted of creating a movie "portraying the authorities in a negative light," and sentenced to 6-10 years in prison for it. He moved to the U.S. two hours later.

Maduro claimed victory in last Sunday's national election--after opposition figures were arrested and the leader barred from running (that should sound familiar). That leader is still the focus of whatever hope is left. Her name is Maria Corina Machado.

Wait, donates?

It's been reported that Elon Musk is donating millions of dollars to the non-leftist candidate for president. But that's not exactly accurate. As my post of last week says, the donation is going to an organization, not to the campaign itself.

A little more clarity is provided in this interview below. He says that the America PAC (political action committee) was formed to support some core values of America:

  • Meritocracy - "you get ahead as a function of your hard work and skill," not because of nepotism (favors/payback) or aristocracy (your privileged family/dynasty)
  • Freedom - "the least amount of government intervention possible"
Peterson goes on (12:00) to call the medical professionals who support transitioning of minors "contemptible cowards" who should go to prison. "This is the worst medical and psychological malpractice I've ever seen anywhere." 

Why, he asks, does Elon agree? Elon was persuaded ("tricked") into allowing one of his sons to transition to a girl, told the boy might otherwise commit suicide. "I lost my son, killed by the woke mind virus."

A citizen-led move to require parent notification before a school changes a child's gender identity (also banning puberty blockers and gender surgeries for minors) got over 400,000 signatures, but not quite enough to get the proposal on a ballot.

One upset mom sued her school district for pushing transition on her 11-year-old daughter, who today, at age 13, doesn't want to be a boy anymore. After being a lifelong leftist, the mom has changed her political party.

Frightened parents are looking for allies. Elon's public stand against these policies makes him a sort of hero. "Family Talk" commends him for taking a solid stand for children and families. He followed through on his vow to take his companies to Texas if the new law passed.

"Break the parent-child relationship" -- yes, it has come to this. The Left claims the right to stand between parents and children when parents want to protect their child and have broken no law. 

Author Abigail Shrier recognizes a pattern in the California government's new law, a pattern she's seen before:

"Child predators follow a common playbook: target the victim, gain their trust, fill a need, and, crucially, isolate the child from her parents. For several years, this has also been standard California state protocol with regard to school children questioning their gender identities. On Monday [July 15], this scheme became law."

Just a few years ago, parents could organize at the local level to re-assert their own values and keep their school boards from deceiving them. They can't opt their kids out of gender identity training anymore, either, because it's in the required bullying curriculum, not in the sex ed classes. A lot of parents are alarmed and upset.

Elon donates 1

Giant personalities that dominate technology industries tend to support leftist politics. But Elon Musk, one of them, has changed political sides. He's promised to donate $45 million per month to the non-left side. It is very significant, though not nearly what Mark Zuckerberg donated back in 2020.

Like Zuckerberg's, Elon's donation will go to a political action committee (PAC) that leans in the direction he prefers. "America PAC" was formed in May to "get out the vote" among sympathetic potential voters. 

Another tech leader supporting this PAC is entrepreneur Joe Lonsdale, founder of multiple companies including Palantir as well as a non-profit, the Cicero Institute. Regarding the Institute, he says "we seek to partner with . . courageous policymakers and public-spirited entrepreneurs who oppose special interests and uphold the common good."

While Musk has always been free with his opinions, he's made more political statements since 2020. He really doesn't like what's going on in California.

Phone bans?

Several states are considering banning or restricting smartphones from students during school hours. The states are: Ohio, Oklahoma, Indiana, plus New York and California, for the reasons proposed by author Jonathan Haidt. 


Kids' mental health declined in the mid-2010's when many became ensnared by their smartphones and social media, distracting them from classwork and face-to-face interactions. "Phone bans in schools, Haidt writes, are shown to increase test scores, cognitive ability, and deeper interest and engagement in schoolwork."

This author is thankful for his early discovery of the joy of actual books: 

"My friends and I used to race each other to the elementary library to snag the next Harry Potter book. I read Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings in the fifth grade, and devoured classics like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn before entering junior high. I may have been more bookish than the average kid, but my community encouraged a love of reading that was contagious."

Trans issue 4

In addition to the medical and scientific evaluation in yesterday's post, there is a paper evaluating what scripture says about transgenderism, today's subject.

As pro-LGBT-and-transgender Christians put it, there is no Bible verse banning transgenderism (a non-existent term when it was written, though there is an Old Testament passage prohibiting a man or woman from presenting as the opposite sex). 

But humans are created as male or female, that's clear, and the gay lifestyle is not approved. Those verses are scattered and numerous (see the article for specifics). Most Christians who want to affirm gay lifestyle and transgenderism therefore have to argue that modern opinion trumps Bible authority. That's a different issue for a different post.

Their conclusion continues the love/truth theme: "We can't be silent about minors being subjected to medical transitioning, or girls being required to share locker rooms with anatomical males. The simultaneous roles of ministering compassionately to transgender individuals [while] opposing transgenderism requires that biblically faithful ministers act lovingly and speak truthfully at the same time."

Is "transition" to the opposite gender a good idea? If we Christians are going to adhere to both truth and love, we should put some effort into understanding what science can tell us because:  "Part of loving and speaking the truth in love is knowing what the truth is."

Four MD's at Reasons to Believe have just published white papers on transition and gender identity to reveal which treatments really help and which really do not.

Exploding numbers of people with gender dysphoria (GD) in recent years resulted in an explosion of gender clinics. Most are guided by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), adhering to the Gender Affirming Model (GAM) of care. The patient's self-diagnosis is affirmed by professionals. There is no exploring of any underlying factors like mental health, sexual abuse, family issues. Transitioning is encouraged. 

After considering studies of GAM outcomes, they find that "support, time and psychotherapy are wiser approaches in these difficult situations than permanent, harmful medical and surgical interventions."

Trans issue 2

Pastor Micheal changed his attitude. He realized that gay/trans people are still people whom he's responsible to love and minister to. Today his son understands that his dad loves him regardless of the fact that he can't endorse his behavior.

We as Christians believe in the truth of evidence-based science (genetics), so we don't think a man or woman can become the opposite sex by wishing it. We must speak what is true. But the Bible tells us to also speak in loveSo this author stopped making fun of gay people and switched over to reaching out to them.

This is the Christian life. When God puts his finger on something and tells us to change it, we don't cling to the old habit. We are open to being changed by the wisdom of God. Pastor Micheal showed us what that looks like in real life.

Trans issue 1

Maybe you remember this story from last year, a pastor's story. He reined in his reaction to Pride Month and gay people in general--to bring his life into line with the Bible:

"Speaking the truth in love," that's our mandate as Christians. Not just truth, not just love, but both of them together. Here's one man's story of how he learned to practice that mandate when transgenderism came to his own home.

Pride Month happened in his city every year, and this author would make fun of it. But it got personal when his son told him that he was gay and considering transition. Grief and shame replaced mocking. The dad is a pastor in a Christian church.

Loneliness came as well, because he and his wife at first wouldn't tell people what was going on. Their son thought his dad hated him because he wouldn't approve of this lifestyle. That's the narrative in our cultural moment: if you love someone, you will endorse all their choices (a principle that doesn't really work in any relationship).

But God was at work in Pastor Micheal's life.

Dissenter 1

A surgeon in Texas watched his profession change during the covid pandemic. Health care professionals who used to adhere to evidence and truth in the past became intimidated by ideology. Dissent of any kind was not tolerated.

It was just the beginning. 

After telling the public that they had stopped surgically transitioning minors, Texas Children's Hospital continued the practice. Within closed doors, they would talk about their methods as well as how to keep secrets from parents.

The surgeon's conscience compelled him to go public with that information. Dr. Eithan Haim became a whistle-blower. The federal government is now taking him to trial.

The film has been translated into 2,160 languages and has been shown globally to 11.1 billion people.

Elite 3

Radical UE1 opinions overwhelmed the U.S. because they are the power-holders. "It is the elite 1 percent who dominate the universities, news media, judiciary, intelligence agencies, giant foundations, and most major corporations."

This tiny group of elitists believe they are superior and therefore feel that they deserve to dominate. In fact, you may have sensed some contempt for the rest of America. Hence the famous line "basket of deplorables."

Scott Rasmussen says this is the scariest data he's ever run across: when asked if they would rather cheat than lose a close election, only 7% of all Americans choose cheating. But 35% of the UE1 would cheat to win elections.

A movie character probably voices their view of ordinary Americans. Played by Meryl Streep in "The Giver," she explains why she should have control and why the people don't deserve freedom:

"When people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong! Every. Single. Time."

So how different are the values of the "unique elite 1%?" Here's the difference on various issues between the opinions of most or all voters compared to those of the unique elite 1% (UE1):

  • is there enough individual freedom in America? - most voters want more, half of UE1 want less
  • favorable view of journalists? - 10% of all voters say no, 71% of UE1 say yes
  • very favorable view of congress? - 6% of most voters say no, 69% of UE1 say yes
Regarding climate change policies, most voters (63-83%) are against the following ideas. But the UE1 like them:

  • 77 % of UE1 want restrictions/rationing on private use of gas, meat, electricity
  • 72% of UE1 want to ban gas powered vehicles
  • 69% of UE1 want to ban gas stoves
  • 58% of UE1 want to ban SUV's
  • 55% of UE1 want to ban non-essential air travel
  • 53% of UE1 want to ban private air conditioning

Elite 1

"Woke" culture values are not main-stream Americans' values, though too many have swallowed the Kool-Aid. How could it happen that so many Americans have been convinced to agree that men can become women (and vice versa), that America is irredeemably evil, that parents must submit to school boards--and so much more? 

What could be driving this "destructive radicalism?" The team at a famous polling company (Rasmussen) noticed that their surveys explain just how the new radicalism spread.

In their regular surveys, "Out of every 1,000 or so respondents, there would always be three or four who were far more radical than everyone else." On further analysis, they discovered the commonalities among these people:

  • they have graduate degrees (not just studies)
  • their family incomes are above $150K
  • they live in large cities
They are the "unique elite 1%." Their opinions are quite different from those of the rest of us.

If food is bad 3

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the main way the U.S. government gives food to the poor in America. What it's supposed to do: "SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being."

The aim is that the poor "can afford nutritious food"--so there are restrictions on which foods can be included under the program.

Given those priorities, you will be surprised to learn that: "Revenue from taxpayer-funded SNAP makes up nearly 20% of Coke’s annual US revenue, and 75% of SNAP goes to ultra-processed foods."

How does this happen? Lobbying by big food companies who convince authorities to promote their bad foods. It's one of the factors in this author's claim that our U.S. food systems are making us sick and fat.

Yesterday's video with actors reciting the Declaration of Independence was well done, unsurprisingly. 

But the language might be challenging, probably requiring a little work to follow. So I had AI re-write it in modern language. AI did a good job--except it eliminated references to God.

A second time I had AI re-write it in modern language, this time specifically using the word "God." In the interest of helping all of us grasp the meaning of our founding document, here it is (though it makes for a very long post):


In Congress, July 4, 1776

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Declaration

Americans were ready to cut the ties that held them to the British empire in 1776 and become independent. The Declaration of Independence announced to the whole world that a new nation was being formed. It's famous, but how many have actually read it?

Thomas Jefferson wrote most of it, explaining why his country wanted independence and what they held against the king of Great Britain. If you haven't read it yourself, enjoy this reading of the document by Hollywood actors.

If food is bad 2

What this author means by "our food system is poisoning us," is not that food companies are evil or trying to kill their fellow Americans. He summarizes it this way: our system is "a web of policies and incentives that promote chemically intensive farming and ultra-processed foods."

Tufts University spent three years and millions of dollars on analyzing the nutrition of common foods. Their study produced the "Tufts food compass" and it's called "the most comprehensive and science-based nutrient profiling system to date.” Take a look:


"After 3 years of work and millions in NIH funding, the study found that Lucky Charms are healthier than whole milk, twice as healthy as beef, and better for you than a baked potato or cooked green peas."

It's real hard to take them seriously if this is the advice we get from experts about what foods are best for us to eat.

If food is bad 1

"Americans have never been fatter. We’ve never been sicker." This author is not alone in his accusation. But it sounds overwrought. We want to see his evidence before we believe it, so here's a summary of his argument.

1) "In 1990, zero states had obesity rates above 20%. As of 2018, zero states had obesity rates below 20%." (The source for this data is not on the image, but compare to this Forbes article. The definition of obesity is the same, BMI of 30 or more.)


2) "
We have the . . sickest population of Americans that has ever existed." (Here's a CDC article about the prevalence of chronic disease for comparison to his statement.)

He says that obesity and sickness were not common in the past: "Your grandparents’ generation grew up exercising less, smoking more, drinking regularly, and without any special diets. Yet, by and large, that generation was healthy, because their food system wasn’t poisoning them."

Yes, he claims that our food system is poisoning us.

Speak up 3

Follow-up to these posts

"Speak up!" is urged by a number of people I've written about on this blog. Speak up when you want to dissent, to tell the truth, instead of taking the easy way out. Speak up, even when you know certain people won't like it and may try to make you suffer for it. (But use the good advice of Kay Coles James when you do it.)

You probably have a "community" of like-minded people--call them your "tribe"--who agree with you on important things. What you might be surprised about is that a lot of Americans outside of your tribe agree with you on the importance of speaking what you believe. (A point that I've heard Vivek Ramaswamy make more than once.)

For example, a gay man writing for FAIR objects strongly to the assumption that he's defined by a mythical "LGBTQ community": "it reinforces an us vs. them mentality, and . . fuels division at a time when Americans desperately need to come together. . . and is frequently conjured as a cudgel wielded by the left to blame and shame." He doesn't like cancel culture, either. 

Don't just assume that other people are woke or leftist. Sometimes Americans of other tribes believe, as you do, in telling the truth and speaking up.
