Uranium is used in those fuel rods that power all our nuclear fission plants in the US today. Thorium presents a different but proven path to nuclear power. But decades ago America devoted our attention to the traditional path and abandoned researching nuclear plants that could use thorium.
The thing is, using thorium is safer and thorium is much more abundant on Earth.
China apparently kept working on it. They've made a breakthrough and resolved the production problems that held the rest of the world back.
