New rocket

(cont'd from yesterday's post)

Falcon Heavy, the new rocket at SpaceX, "can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle . . at one-third the cost." Twice the weight, one-third the cost, undeniably impressive.

Falcon 9 is the rocket SpaceX has already launched 15 times, and it's come back to land safely. Falcon Heavy uses three of those Falcon 9 engine cores for its first stage. All the cores have now tested successfully. The FH will come back to a landing pad on earth and be used again.

That is SpaceX's distinction - millions and millions of dollars saved, because the rockets can be re-used.


This is the rocket that will take NASA crew into space in 2018.

SpaceX flight

At least four of us in my family have been highly anticipating the test flight of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket. It's finally going to happen:

"SpaceX Falcon Heavy Ready For Highly Anticipated Test Flight On February 6"

Its first stage is three Falcon 9 rocket cores strapped together, for a total of 27 engines that must ignite all at once. All three will return to earth to be re-used in the future. 


If this works next Tuesday - if the FH successfully makes it into orbit -  "it will be a mind-boggling feat of skill and engineering."

Final Falcon 9

This is for those of you who like news about Elon Musk's SpaceX. Use the link if you want more engineering details.

Falcon 9 is the rocket SpaceX has used for years. The first stage is reusable - a tremendous innovation that made launches hugely less expensive than they used to be when a brand new first stage was required for every launch. 


"Block 5" is the latest and final major design revision to Falcon 9, moving toward the goal to make space travel more comparable to air travel on earth. Engine thrust is increased by 8%, making this version about twice as powerful as the first Falcon 9 in 2010.

They've also made the first stage more reusable. Instead of good for two flights, "it's designed to do 10 or more flights with no refurbishment between each flight. The only thing that needs to change is to reload propellant and fly again."

The Block 5 Falcon 9 will meet NASA's requirements for crewed flight.

Here's the May 11 launch for a Bangladesh satellite, featuring Falcon 9's 25th safe return of a first stage booster.

Ice cream launch

SpaceX launched another mission to the International Space Station yesterday. The booster rocket again came back to earth and landed safely in Florida. The Dragon (space capsule) brought over 6,000 lbs. of supplies up to the ISS.

Included in those supplies was ice cream for the astronauts. It was delivered in freezers which will come back when Dragon returns to earth, packed with experiments done in space.

Mice were also delivered to the ISS for research on visual problems, and protein crystals for the Michael J. Fox Foundation research into Parkinsons disease.

"This particular Dragon is brand new, as is the Falcon rocket. In June, SpaceX launched its first reused Dragon, and in March, its first reused Falcon. From now on, the company said it may only fly used Dragons."

BFR

Elon Musk says it's vital to figure out how to fund this very expensive enterprise of making humanity into a "multi-planetary species." He thinks they have a plan that will provide the money.


It's a progression through a sequence of rockets. Right now SpaceX uses its Falcon 9 to deliver cargo up to the International Space Station (ISS) for its customer, NASA. Next, the Falcon Heavy will take crew to the ISS for NASA, and then make trips to the moon to establish a base there.

Finally, another much bigger rocket will take the place of both of those. Til they find a good name, they're calling it the "BFR." You saw in Tuesday's post that it will not only go to the moon and to Mars, but also make commercial flights right here on earth, flying above the atmosphere.

There's much, much more to the plan on this video. One amazing thing they've learned after 16 successful landings of the Falcon 9 in a row . . is how to make a perfect propulsion landing. It's gotten so precise that Elon says the rocket doesn't need landing legs anymore. Incredible. They must have this landing skill perfected to take colonists to Mars.

Not safe

Seven years without a failure, then boom - the rocket blows up two minutes after launch. The failure of one part (out of the gazillion parts that go into a rocket) means destruction, waste, loss of investment, loss of time.

On June 28, almost a month ago, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket exploded on its way to the International Space Station. Two and a half tons of supplies intended for the staff there was a complete loss. Thankfully, the rocket was un-manned so there was no loss of life, just a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars.



But space is a risky business. Does this quote sound familiar:

"If you can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross. But it's not for the timid."

Competitor

NASA launched a lunar lander from Cape Canaveral last month, but the rocket booster was not from the well-known and often-used SpaceX. 

United Launch Alliance (ULA), owned by Lockheed Martin and Boeing, was formed in 2005 to make rockets. They dominated the market for almost a decade, charging NASA over $400 million per launch. NASA contracted with them in 2013 for 28 launches, but SpaceX protested, offering a price of just $90 million using their Falcon 9.

A major restructuring of ULA followed with the goal being to cut its launch pricing in half so that it could compete, but the company was still in danger of bankruptcy by 2015. They asked for $1+ billion from the US Air Force to help them develop a new rocket called the Vulcan. Today that rocket provides 22,000 jobs across the country.

Jumping over the intervening years, last month's launch was delivered by ULA's brand new rocket, the Vulcan Centaur, at a price to NASA of $108 million for its five payloads.

I still have questions about ULA. If I find answers, I'll continue this.

Dragon #2

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket took the Dragon capsule into space on Saturday, where it docked yesterday with the International Space Station (ISS) to unload its 6000 lbs. of supplies.

That webcast in yesterday's post starts its launch coverage at 10 minutes, and it's really enjoyable. But in case you want to skip it, here's information from the video:

  • it took off from the historic launch pad 39A, where the Saturn 5 rocket once stood
  • it had to take off at the precisely correct second in order to match its orbit with ISS
  • part of the payload is the Rollout Solar Array (ROSA) which will unfold in orbit to try out its flexible solar panel
  • the first stage of the rocket is loaded with a million pounds of space-grade kerosene, liquid oxygen, and gaseous helium
  • watch earth falling away after lift off (camera on exterior of rocket)
  • watch Stage One come back to earth and land safely at Cape Canaveral

FH success

Falcon Heavy launched yesterday for just the second time ever, a success in every way. Or, as they like to say at SpaceX, it was a "nominal" launch that worked just as planned.

Two Falcon 9 side boosters landed safely back on earth eight minutes later and will be used again in the future. The central core booster landed safely on a drone ship in the Atlantic. 

FH placed a satellite into orbit for its first commercial customer, Arabsat:

"Falcon Heavy is the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost."

SpaceX customer

This week SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket (in California) to deploy ten satellites in low orbit for its customer, Iridium. The webcast is in real time and takes about 96 minutes to show the whole launch, the return of the first stage, and then the release of all ten satellites.

Falcon 9's principal integration engineer addresses fuel loading, the one-second launch window, the tower next to the rocket.

Below is a short video within that webcast. Iridium's CEO explains that their 66 satellites enable communication around the globe, making connections in remote and dangerous locations for first-responders in emergencies, and anywhere no other connection is possible. They transmit data for machines, ocean buoys, refrigerators -- the internet of things.

Launch success

"People are coming from all around the world to see what will either be a great rocket launch or the best fireworks display they've ever seen," said Elon Musk on Monday, predicting that the test flight of Falcon Heavy would be exciting either way.

It turned out to be a spectacular launch, the rocket performing "nominally" - that is, just as it was supposed to. SpaceX streamed the launch live:



Cheering in the background is the sound of very excited guests and employees watching it take place. 

Falcon Heavy will carry customer payloads in the future, but for this very first test flight it carries a red Tesla roadster with a mannequin in the driver's seat, wearing a space suit.

SpaceX COO

Superstar Elon Musk dominates public attention whenever SpaceX makes news. He founded the company, but he doesn't actually run it anymore. Elon gets headlines, but there's an engineer who runs it.

Gwynne Shotwell is President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX. 


Elon hired her way back in 2002. As Director of Business Development, she successfully negotiated the contract (2008) with NASA to deliver commercial resupply services to the International Space Station. Promotion to the position of president followed. 

Gwynne is a superstar herself. She led the effort to build the Falcon rocket. Under her leadership, SpaceX was the first private company to successfully launch, orbit and recover a spacecraft and send one to the ISS . . plus all the recent SpaceX achievements.

COO

Space operations used to be the domain of governments only. But now there's a big private sector. In the private, non-government space business, there's no more important name than Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX.

Reuseable

(2nd of two)

It's expensive (~$70 million) to go into space when you need a brand new rocket every single time. If the same rocket can be used twice, that cuts the cost in half.

But think about the obstacles that must be overcome - enormous pressure and heat of course, plus a very tricky landing. Last month SpaceX failed in the attempt to bring a rocket back to earth safely because it ran out of hydraulic fluid.

NASA attraction

Kennedy Space Center on the Atlantic coast of Florida will open a new 50,000 square foot attraction next March. NASA calls it "Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex."

New goals for space travel were set during the last administration, including missions both to the moon and to Mars. With attention again on space travel, the new Gateway will simulate what that's going to be like with multiple guest experiences.

At "Spaceport KSC" you'll enter a galactic airport of the future. You'll hear atmospheric airport chatter, watch launches and landings through the windows, and view destination promo videos. You can then board a spaceship (2-story 4D flying theater) for one of four different journeys.

On the second floor you'll get up close to an actual (SpaceX) Falcon 9 rocket booster which launched a satellite in 2016 and was a side booster on the first Falcon Heavy launch in 2018. Watch its arrival on site:

Starhopper

Elon Musk's original, ultimate goal for SpaceX was to enable humans to land on other planets. Those trips will be made with the rocket they're working on, called "Starship." It's been in design mode for years,  while rockets Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy set satellites in space and did cargo flights to the International Space Station.

SpaceX built a prototype called "Starhopper" for the purpose of testing facets of Starship's development. Starhoppper successfully flew its fourth and final test just this week.

Boca Chica 1

So remote that fresh water is trucked in, Boca Chica is - or was - a sleepy, unincorporated little community in Texas. Residents like the quiet life there near the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, at Texas' southern tip, with no shops or amenities.

A new neighbor wanted to move to Boca Chica in 2012, a newcomer so significant that a public meeting was called. SpaceX wanted to build its own launch site there for twelve launches per year of the Falcon 9 -- just a little noise 12x/year.

SpaceX broke ground in 2014 and Boca Chica will never be the same. Residents make a hobby of watching the rocket company and taking pictures. Federal regulations required a level of safety around the site, so checkpoints were set up to stop anyone who wasn't on the list of property owners from getting close. 

As you know, SpaceX is way beyond Falcon 9 now. All testing of their new Starship is done here, the one that is designed to take 100 people at a time to Mars. It's much bigger, there's a lot of construction, and the new neighbor is looking pretty burly.

Note: boosting Crew Dragon into space for this mission is the Falcon 9 rocket, which has a track record of about fifty successful launches. Falcon 9 rockets and Dragon capsules are both re-usable for multiple missions, but for this one they are new and unused.

SpaceX on track

SpaceX is having their most successful year yet, with twelve launches so far and another eight scheduled by year's end - more than any other company . . or even country.

The most powerful operational rocket in the world, SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, was successfully tested a second time on Sept. 2, and will take its first flight in November. 

"With the ability to lift into orbit over 54 metric tons (119,000 lb)--a mass equivalent to a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost."

More Starship 2

What if airplanes were not re-usable, what if they were destroyed after every flight? It would be so expensive to fly to your destination that you would be lucky to fly once ever in your life. 

It used to be that way with space launches. Up until recently, a brand new rocket had to be built for every single launch. SpaceX was first to put a rocket into orbit and return it safely for another flight, a huge cost savings.

From the beginning, this was the SpaceX vision. They've done it with Falcon 9 over 300 times, and Starship will be reusable as well. It's a game changer, no question: a spaceship to transport people safely in space, usable again and again like an airplane. It will take NASA astronauts to the moon (Artemis mission).

Starship will also carry cargo. The price to get your satellite or experiment into space will drop something like ten-fold. NASA's old Space Shuttle had to charge $25,000 per pound of payload. Starship will probably be able to charge about $1500 per pound.
