(cont'd from yesterday's post)
Laptops and other devices were eagerly adopted by American school districts in the expectation that they would be good for students. As it turned out, electronic devices in the hands of kids in classrooms (generated image) were bad for learning.
How disappointing. According to psychologist Jonathan Haidt, they are bad for kids in general. But apart from that, they just don't learn as well. Many states and individual schools and teachers have banned phones from their classrooms.
Digital devices could be one reason for the decline of test scores. According to a recent elementary teacher survey, "Nearly all students use devices in classrooms." But that may be starting to change.
University of Chicago Law School has a new policy in place: "Across all 1L sections, we will prohibit the use of electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, and phones in the classroom." Students must develop their own ability for "critical thinking, legal writing skills, and strategic judgment" without relying on AI.
Winchester College in Britain, an academically selective college, has done it as well: "Winchester College drops laptops for pen and paper."
