NASA Chief

NASA Chief Jim Bridenstine gave an interview to space.com after the cancelling of yesterday's intended mission. After worldwide attention and excitement for it, the flight was cancelled because there was too much electricity in the atmosphere. Everyone is disappointed.

But Bridenstine hits the right tone. He says it was a great day for NASA and a great day for SpaceX - and they made the right decision to delay. The parameters for go/no/go were set ahead of time and the two teams (SpaceX and NASA) worked impressively together.




As you know, this mission is historic because it's the first time in nine years that America is putting its own astronauts into space. But it's also the very first time that NASA is purchasing their ride from a private-sector U.S. company. Instead of building their own space vehicles, NASA is a customer (in this case) of SpaceX.

Chief Bridenstine is enthusiastic about private companies going into space for several reasons. One reason is that it may be possible to create eye retinas in the microgravity of space.

NASA news

In case you missed it this weekend:

1) Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken splashed down safely yesterday, nineteen hours after Dragon (their SpaceX spacecraft) left the International Space Station. The first splashdown in 45 years is also the first ever NASA commercial mission (meaning that a private company built the spacecraft in partnership with NASA).



Elon Musk's elated reaction (20:09) at their safe return: "Thank God! I'm not very religious, but I prayed for this one." No kidding, so did I.

2) "Perseverance," the new rover, launched last Friday. Next February it will land on Mars to take samples and look for any signs of ancient life. All the data NASA has received indicates that the mission flight is nominal, proceeding as expected.

NASA is focused on the goal to take astronauts to the moon in 2024: "All that we build, all that we study, all that we do, prepares us to go."

NASA partner

When the first human being set foot on the moon in 1969, only national governments had the resources to go into space because it takes a lot of money, innovation, talent, work. But that isn't the situation today. 

Multiple companies are forming to do business in space. NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (an agency of the U.S. Government), supports the trend:

"A robust and competitive commercial space sector is vital to continued progress in space. The United States is committed to encouraging and facilitating the growth of a U.S. commercial space sector . . . "

Instead of building their own rockets, NASA is now a client of companies that build rockets. They specify what they need and share information, but people who work at companies like SpaceX are the ones who build them. 

Here are Elon Musk and Jim Bridenstine (former head of NASA) in 2020 discussing their partnership. Bridenstine says that SpaceX has something NASA has been lacking, a "willingness to fail." He says they "fly, test, fail, fix" - repeatedly. (To get to the good stuff, start at about 2:40.)

Still SpaceX

Last April NASA awarded a $2.9 billion contract for a lunar lander to SpaceX for practical reasons. Blue Origin and Dynetics lost that competition. 

But Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) didn't let it go. The two losing companies filed a challenge and complaint with NASA. No money could flow to help SpaceX develop its Starship until the challenge was answered and resolved.

NASA is done with its deliberations now, concluding that they decided fairly in April - based on the funds that Congress had given NASA to work with.

So . . it's still SpaceX.

Artemis is the name of the mission to land people on the moon again, many years after the last time. There will be more bumps in the road and politics will play a huge part in the outcome. Count me in with the American people who hope it can still be done.

Competitor

NASA launched a lunar lander from Cape Canaveral last month, but the rocket booster was not from the well-known and often-used SpaceX. 

United Launch Alliance (ULA), owned by Lockheed Martin and Boeing, was formed in 2005 to make rockets. They dominated the market for almost a decade, charging NASA over $400 million per launch. NASA contracted with them in 2013 for 28 launches, but SpaceX protested, offering a price of just $90 million using their Falcon 9.

A major restructuring of ULA followed with the goal being to cut its launch pricing in half so that it could compete, but the company was still in danger of bankruptcy by 2015. They asked for $1+ billion from the US Air Force to help them develop a new rocket called the Vulcan. Today that rocket provides 22,000 jobs across the country.

Jumping over the intervening years, last month's launch was delivered by ULA's brand new rocket, the Vulcan Centaur, at a price to NASA of $108 million for its five payloads.

I still have questions about ULA. If I find answers, I'll continue this.

NASA invites you to participate in the excitement of tomorrow's launch.

Launch is still scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, tomorrow at 3:33 p.m. in the Midwest (that's 4:33 p.m. EDT, Eastern U.S.). NASA will keep you informed and updated if you register with them at #LAUNCHAMERICA.

NASA tv will start live coverage at 11:00 a.m. Midwest time (noon EDT) which will include watching the two astronauts driven to the rocket in a Tesla Model X.

NASA contracts

Nokia's contract to build a lunar cellular network part is just one of many that NASA has selected. 

Fourteen privately held companies are now partnering with NASA in the effort to put Americans on the moon again by 2024. The total dollar sum divided between the companies is $370 million.



America's presence in space will be sustainably long-term. Rockets and other space craft will need the ability to re-fuel in orbit, thus more than two-thirds of the money relates to management of cryogenic fluids like liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

For example, SpaceX will get $53 million for an in-space demonstration transferring 11 tons of liquid oxygen between tanks on one of its starships.

Mars ambition 2

Mars holds a fascination for people, regardless of what country they're from.



The European Space Agency and Roscosmos (Russian) are working on a mission called "ExoMars" with a rover they hope will launch late next summer.

Virgin Orbit is working with partners from Poland to send satellites to Mars around 2022.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) will send an orbiter this summer.

NASA's administrator, Jim Bridenstine, says “Mars remains the horizon goal for NASA’s [U.S.] human exploration program, but it is important to note that we are at Mars now, with a growing number of robotic assets.”

Travel to Mars at its closest proximity will still take months. Its thin atmosphere has only a trace of oxygen. So the mission NASA plans to launch this coming summer will be to try making oxygen from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

NASA changes

Every incoming executive probably has plans to change something in his new role. New NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has a plan for America's space program which he says will take us back to basics.

We need more launches, he says first, "on a yearly cadence." Can our Artemis-designated space vehicle, Boeing's SLS, keep up with that aggressive push in light of its history of missing both budgets and target dates? His response: "It's 100% achievable." With regard to past SLS failures, NASA will take responsibility to "make better decisions." I hope so.

An additional launch was added to the original Artemis plan. Artemis 3 will launch next year, 2027, because it's "imperative," he says, to practice the docking of the SLS with the lunar lander (made by either SpaceX or Blue Origin). No human feet will stand on the Moon's surface til Artemis 4 which is scheduled for 2028.

Launch day

This is a big, big day for SpaceX. Today's mission is Demo-2, the second demonstration of Crew Dragon. Upon successful completion of this mission, SpaceX will be certified by NASA for operational crew missions to and from the International Space Station.

From their website: "SpaceX is returning human spaceflight to the United States with one of the safest, most advanced systems ever built, and NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is a turning point for America’s future in space exploration that lays the groundwork for future missions to the MoonMarsand beyond."

Rescuing NASA




Larry Bell, a professor at the University of Houston, heads their graduate program in space architecture.  According to Dr. Bell, NASA needs rescuing from "terminal public apathy."

His recommendation?  " . . the government should commercialize all future launch vehicle development and operations.  NASA can then direct its full attention to doing things it's very good at, such as planning future robotic and human planetary exploration missions . ."

Kennedy Space Center was a huge hit with our family when we visited a couple of weeks ago.

SN15 did it

SpaceX accomplished it at last, launching the new version of Starship (SN15) six miles up and returning it to the ground in a soft landing. All the previous prototypes ended in "rud" - rapid unplanned disassembly, i.e. explosion.


As you know, Starship is being developed by the private corporation SpaceX for NASA to use on its crewed mission to the moon, perhaps by 2024. SpaceX also plans to use this craft for its own commercial flights.

The two other companies that were considered by NASA for the job were Blue Origin and Dynetics. They lost the bid to SpaceX. Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin has filed a complaint with the government. So, for now, NASA is unable to give SpaceX any money for the job. If it isn't settled quickly, that moon mission goal may well be delayed. In fact, the 2024 goal is expected to slide under the current administration anyway.

Nuclear & NASA

It's not only tech companies that invest in new applications of nuclear power. NASA (American Space and Aeronautics Agency) is researching how to make nuclear energy our reliable power source for use on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Getting astronauts there is not the entire challenge. When they get there, they'll need power for living and exploring. There won't be a back-up electrical grid using natural gas or coal or any fossil fuel. A nuclear plant will have to support the Artemis mission's goal, a sustainable human presence on the Moon.

It's called the fission surface power project. The fission reactor will have to be relatively lightweight, self-contained, and small compared to what we have on earth. How powerful must it be? At least 40 kilowatts. In earth terms, it could "continuously run 30 households for ten years."

Space mining

No longer is activity in space limited to nations with big budgets. In the U.S., NASA changed their way of operating to a model of cooperation with private businesses (like SpaceX) who do all the building while working with NASA's expertise. 

Rocket launches, though, are not the only thing being done in space by private businesses. For example, harvesting solar power from outside our atmosphere is the goal of some. 

Another idea being considered is to mine asteroids for metals we need on earth. 


Asteroid 16 Psyche is a large one between Mars and Jupiter, made mostly of metal (like a planet core) rather than the typical rock or ice. It's just right for mining, but far away and still years off. NASA plans a mission simply to orbit and document it by 2026.

Two smaller metal-rich asteroids are much closer and may be a better bet for mining. If it can be done, it could be a game changer for future technology on earth because one of them seems to contain more iron, nickel and cobalt than all earth's reserves.

Lunar lander 1

Under the previous U.S. president, a goal of 2024 was set to go back to the moon. Last week NASA chose SpaceX to accomplish this goal.

Starship, the same new spacecraft being developed and tested at Boca Chica TX, will be NASA's lunar lander for its Artemis mission.


SpaceX was chosen over two other competitors (Blue Origin and Dynetics) because in addition to being highly rated in both management and technical categories, SpaceX was also the lowest bidder. 

They bid to do the job for NASA for $2.9 billion, and to assume about the same financial risk for themselves to cover the cost of development and testing because they will also use Starship for their private commercial activities.

Artemis 1

NASA adopted (during the previous administration) the goal of returning a human presence to our Moon for long-term research and exploration: the Artemis project.

A series of missions will get us there, and the first one is coming soon. After a successful fueling test of its SLS rocket last month, the window which has been targeted for Artemis 1 is August 23-September 6.

Without crew, this first mission will test how NASA's deep space exploration systems work together: the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and the ground systems at Kennedy Space Center.

Orion is the spacecraft designed for human crew. On this mission, it will fly 280,000 miles (thousands of miles beyond the moon) over a period of 4-6 weeks.

Artemis 1's mission manager says, “It will blaze a trail that people will follow on the next Orion flight, pushing the edges of the envelope to prepare for that mission.”

Moon landing

The U.S. ice president has instructed NASA to place astronauts on the lunar surface by 2024, four years earlier than originally planned. 

NASA administrator Bridenstine says that the timeline, though challenging, is do-able. And they have a plan.

Construction will begin in 2022 on "Lunar Orbital Platform - Gateway," a space station which will stay in orbit around the moon. Lunar landers will launch from this platform. 

Apollo 11 sent three astronauts to the moon on the Saturn 5 rocket in July of 1969, fifty years ago this coming summer.

SpaceX & NASA

(cont'd from yesterday's post)

SpaceX is going to join a very exclusive club next year if they reach their goal--the club of those who are able to send humans into space. So far only a few governments have that ability.

Crew Dragon (Dragon Version 2) is the spacecraft which will take crew to the International Space Station in  Q2 (second quarter) of 2018 for NASA. It will be powered by the Falcon Heavy rocket (to be tested this summer), the second most powerful vehicle ever to reach orbit, surpassed in history only by Saturn V.

Russia was first to send humans into space and has been transporting US astronauts to the ISS with its Soyuz rocket, but that contractual partnership is ending. SpaceX will now be doing that for NASA (yesterday's post). 


When SpaceX takes over this job, it will not only save US taxpayers a lot of money, but all the price of sending astronauts to the ISS will stay in the US  :)

Still going 2

Yesterday's re-post is more than five years old, so there may have been tweaks in the plan since we first looked at it. The latest description of the Artemis Program (image) on NASA's website reflects a up-to-date overview.

The plan consists of four missions. Artemis 1 was completed in December of 2022, confirming that NASA has a "foundational deep-space transportation system" that really works, that can be relied on to carry out the rest of the missions.


People won't actually walk on the Moon until the third mission, Artemis 3. Two members of the crew of four will explore the lunar South Pole region for a week. So far, it's scheduled for some time in 2028. The mission is expected to last about 30 days.

Then there's the far more complicated fourth mission, Artemis 4. A new lunar space station will be assembled from modules brought by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Astronauts will live and work there in orbit, performing multiple ground launches and experiments.

But before #3 and #4, there will be the second mission, Artemis 2 . . and that's going to launch next month.

We are going 2

Space is not life-friendly for human beings. But NASA, it seems, is determined to build a base on the Moon by 2024. They'll have to figure out how to provide air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, tolerable pressure, temperatures that don't freeze us or fry us. A lunar day in the sun can be hot enough to boil water. A lunar night is brutally cold.

But, surprisingly, a stable temperature environment has been discovered on the Moon's surface:

"NASA-funded scientists have discovered shaded locations within pits on the Moon that always hover around a comfortable 63 F . . ." That's human-friendly.
